Why the music you listen to matters.
Music is an art, and can be a form of expression. Music can also influence your thoughts and actions. Today I ask you to really pay attention to the message or story the song or music your are listening to is conveying.
How music affects you and why it's important.
There are plenty of scientific studies that have been conducted to research the effects of music on your mind, body, and even mood. Don't worry, I won't bore you with research, graphs, or even theory. I do, however, encourage you to use discernment and to trust your intuition about the type of media you are consuming. This can be applied to not only music but also books, movies, videos, and any other type of entertainment. With that being said, let’s see what the book of Proverbs says about discernment and knowledge. In Proverbs chapter 18 verse 15 it says, “The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out."
So let us be wise and figure out why the music you listen to is important. The music you listen to is important because it affects your mood, your thoughts, and even your actions. As is written in Proverbs chapter 23 verse 7, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” It’s kind of like the old saying, “you are what you eat”, If you only eat unhealthy food, you will be unhealthy. Likewise, something can be said about the music you are listening to. If you listen to music that promotes violence, fornication, adultery, and other abominations, you will become those things. You become what you think because in your mind and heart you are coming into agreement with the message the music you are listening to is conveying. You might think to yourself, “This is a little extreme, he’s taking this music thing too far”, but truly, I tell you this is my testimony. I had many favorite artists that would promote such things, they would even promote suicide, witchcraft and other evil things. I liked the way sad music would make me feel it was intoxicating, but after learning the truth, I repented and asked the Lord for forgiveness and strength to find music that would honor Him and also help me have a better mindset. That’s when I discovered my new favorite artists such as CHANGETHEWXRLD and aftrthght their music is uplifting, and it glorifies the Lord. God has called us to be holy just as He is. It is written in 1 Peter chapter 1 verse 15-17, “But as the one who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct; for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy. If you appeal to the Father who judges impartially according to each one’s work, you are to conduct yourselves in reverence during your time living as strangers.” With that being said, I challenge you to read the lyrics and to reflect, and decide whether the song or music you are listening to is glorying to God, productive or helpful to you. This post is not to condemn, but to encourage you to be renewed by the transformation of your mind (Romans 12:2).
I'll end with this. Many people idolize their favorite artists, and it can be said that concerts are a form of worship. In addition, if you look closely, you will see many artists performing rituals before your very eyes and even casting spells during their performance. Don’t believe me? It’s okay. It sounds far-fetched, but I encourage you to look into it. Finally, let us use discernment and choose our music wisely. For it is written in Deuteronomy chapter 7 verse 26, “Do not bring any detestable thing into your house, or you will be set apart for destruction like it.” I believe this can be extended to your person, your car, and even your electronic devices.
